Life of A Laxer: Abby

LAX!LAX!LAX! This simple term is what runs through the minds of lacrosse players all over the world, whether they are girls or boys. One thing all “laxers” have in common is their determination to succeed in what they love, which in this case is the competitive sport of lacrosse. Recently I talked to fifteen-year-old Abby from the suburbs of Philly, who has been playing lacrosse for over six years! Now that’s what I call a long time! I asked her how she started playing lacrosse and she said “A lot of my friends were talking about starting to play so I thought I would join them!” On this I can relate entirely since that’s also how I began, which is actually quite common. Everyone has their own definition of girl’s lacrosse and I asked Abby what hers was and she said “Although it’s not the most physical sport played, and no the most world-wide sport known, it should receive more credit and respect than it gets. It’s a complicated sport that requires not only skill, but a focused mind and a special relationship and connection with your teammates.” On that I’m pretty sure many many people agree—well at least I do. Many girls have never even heard of girl’s lacrosse so I asked Abby what tip she would give to the girls who are new to the game. She said “It’s suck a difficult sport to pick up right away, so don’t give up. Practice, practice, practice! It’ll only make you a better player.” I later asked her if she thought of playing lacrosse in the future, and I learned that she wanted to play in college but she did not see herself playing after that—she wants to coach in the future. Talking to Abby made me realize that she held a true calling to lacrosse. She did not seem to hesitate at all with her answers, which shocked me since not many laxers that I’ve talked to feel this passionate about lacrosse. I had to ask her what her life motto was and she did not let me down with her answer. She said “My motto is that life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, its’ about learning to dance in the rain.”
